I am getting more into the story now that it is evolving and more action is occurring. I am confused about the red A that showed up in the sky during chapter 12. Was it Chillingsworth that made that happen? I know it is kind of late to ask this but at the beginning of the story Hester decided to stay around the Boston area. She had the choice to move so why did she stay?

Hey, Mira made a post!
ReplyDeleteThe red "A" in the sky was a supernatural symbol, Chillingworth had nothing to do with it. It's kind of like Pearl is symbolic of the red "A" only it's a literal thing up in the sky.
Hester didn't so much decide to stay, she really felt compelled to do so. She could legally have left, but her crime chained her to the place, much as people return to the scene of the crime, only Hester couldn't leave in the first place. Starting all over would have been to hard for her. She felt her penance was best done where she was.
